Ways to fight frizzy hair without heat

Singapore is so hot! By the way research shows suggests that the higher temperatures literally gets people hot and bothered. I’m Dr.TWL a dermatologist and I’m going to be sharing about how heat and humidity can affect your skin and hair. First up, frizzy hair can be due to chemical or heat related damage but high humidity levels can affect the cuticle microenvironment.

In short, frizzy hair can be due to

  • Humidity

  • Heat-chemically damaged hair

  • Dehydrated, brittle hair

  • Poor grooming

Here are my top ways on how to tame frizzy hair without heat or chemicals

Frizzy hair solutions

  • Step-wise detangling routine

Must have combs, brushes in every girl’s haircare routine

  • Wide tooth detangling comb for wet hair, great for applying conditioner evenly

  • Paddle brush for

    • Massage

    • Wet-dry hair detangling

    • Blow-out

  • Drying methods

    • Towel dry

    • Hairdryer for scalp

It’s best to towel dry as much as possible in a humid country like Singapore, though I usually do a quick blow dry no longer than 3-5 minutes on the scalp and hair ends with a paddle brush just to add volume.

Which hairdryer should I use? Does the hairdryer brand make a difference?

All hairdryers are quite similar, so you don’t need to get a fancy one. But essentially you want to use the lowest heat setting. I find that ionic hairdryers don’t really make much of a difference, but ionic brushes work well for frizz, quick touch-ups.

Should I use hair gels or sprays?

The heat and humidity makes using styling products challenging and rather unsustainable. Not to say that most are laden with chemicals that are at least terrible for the environment and also potentially hazardous when it comes to inhalation risks etc. I also avoid hair gels because these tend to be too stiff and unnatural looking and also can damage hair. Rather I just use a hair oil to smoothen out, just a little bit will do. I have included my step by step hair care routine for frizzy hair, a method of detangling that minimises heat styIing needs, subscribe to my newsletter for weekly updates.
